The school’s international dimension is outstanding and accredited the Full Award International School by The British Council. We have hosted 4 international summer schools since 2011 – bringing students from France, Spain, Mauritius and Russia to work with our students on STEM type projects such as The Science of Flight. We have also hosted individual student groups from Russia, France and Holland at various times of the school year, working with a number of different departments. On a professional level we have supported teachers from Mauritius, Bangladesh and Japan on placements with us ranging from two weeks to six months.
Our partnership visits have included two student expeditions to Ghana and one to Sri Lanka, both with projects in country. We have also completed a cultural exchange to our partners at Mahatma Gandhi Institute in Mauritius.
These partnerships also support our Global Justice initiatives through Chaplaincy, linking to the Rights and Responsibilities Global Themes of the British Council and CAFOD. This underpins our school approaches to developing world issues alongside our Catholic ethos as well as global issues such as Climate Change. Our Eco Group take inspiration from our reports from Sri Lanka on sustainability, for example.
Our International School element means ALL students at Our Lady’s learn about international issues, whether in class (linked to the curriculum areas), through assemblies and presentations or through wider curriculum opportunities. Currently curriculum areas that have direct involvement with international partnerships are:
- Engineering – School 244, St Petersburg and Maris College, The Hague
- Maths – Mahatma Gandhi Institute, Mauritius
- Art – Chigasaki Junior High, Japan and Maris College , The Hague
- English – Chigasaki Junior High, Japan
- Science – Eguafo Junior High, Ghana
This enables students to explore different cultures and enhance their understanding of how other communities live, work, trade and co-exist together as well as understand how different cultures live in peace or conflict and the context for this. Internationalism aims to promote empathy with people of the same age who live in different circumstances and to celebrate these differences and things held in common
