Welcome to Drama at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic High School. Drama is a subject that challenges pupils to work both individually and as part of groups. We want the pupils to grow in this subject, both in terms of their practical skills and knowledge of drama, but also understanding wider social, historical and emotional issues. This has a huge impact on the pupils understanding of the world in which we live and matters that definitely concern us.
We aim to inspire the pupils to enjoy the subject, using their personalities and opinions to create interesting and thought provoking performances. From year seven every pupil will be expected to immerse themselves in to all aspects of creating theatre. As we progress on to GCSE we begin to cover costume design, lighting sound and set design as part of the AQA course.
Year seven focuses largely on key skills, improving team work and allowing the individual to gain confidence in their ability. We want the pupils to become compassionate and respectful to the space, topics and fellow learners. Covering a whole range of skills from Mime, Physical theatre, scripted texts to comedy.
Year eight starts to really push the pupils forward and we strive for the pupils to begin to understand how theatre is made and use appropriate dramatic terminology when describing and evaluating the works of themselves and of others. Topics are more challenging and vary according to the needs of the class. An assessment is undertaken at the end of every half term, where a key skill or dramatic technique will be concentrated. Starting with changing Mood and atmosphere, Physical movement, Political theatre and theatre of the absurd.
Year nine is the start of the AQA GCSE course and sets the pupils off on their journey in to creating, performing and writing about drama. We cover Greek mythology, Conscience alley, Fables and explore historical events. Building knowledge, skills and autonomy in time for their final assessments in year eleven.
