Welcome to Engineering + Technology

Engineering and Technology are embedded into our daily lives with the technology and systems that affect us as humans from an early age often taken for granted, we often overlook the importance of design, function and manufacture as a key to improve our world for our future and the future generations.

We as a staff, believe that we have a responsibility to equip our students with the skills, knowledge and understanding to be creative and innovative in design and in the production/manufacture of engineered products. We must learn from successes and failure in design and engineering in order to make our world a better place.

Engineering principles are at the heart of our school with our specialist status utilised to provide excellent facilities and opportunities for our students both in school and through our industrial links with local engineering companies.  The Engineering and Technology department has fully embraced the vision by providing a curriculum and learning environment that ensures every student fulfils their potential in a range of subject areas within the subject.

The department has well-resourced facilities and technician support in all areas with:

  • Engineering Computer suite with excellent CAD facilities,
  • Engineering Electronics suite with Computers/CAD facilities,
  • specific CAD/CAM room with PC access and CAM facilities (including 3D Printing, Router and Lathe),
  • Product Design/Engineering workshop with hard engineering machinery (centre lathes, vertical mill etc.),
  • Food Technology room,
  • Graphics/Product Design room,
  • Textiles Facilities
  • 2 specialist technicians (Food and Textiles) (Engineering/CAD CAM)

The experienced and caring staff within the department offer extra-curricular activities where students of all abilities are given the opportunity to enhance and extend their experiences.

Curriculum Overview

Learning Programmes

All students in Key Stage 3 are issued with a new A4 exercise book each Academic Year which follows them to each specialist area.

There are 3 Learning Programmes in total each year making 9 over KS3, students rotate on a carousel following the rotation of RMT – Graphics – Food – Textiles – Electronics/CAD/Systems (staff dependant).

Rotation 1 (September to Christmas) Rotation 2(January to Easter) Rotation 3 (Easter to July).

In Design and Technology and Engineering, pupils combine practical and technological skills with creative thinking to design and make products and systems that meet human needs. They learn to use current technologies and consider the impact of future technological developments. They learn to think creatively and intervene to improve the quality of life, solving problems as individuals and members of a team.

Learners at Key Stage 3 have 1 hour 15 mins per week of Technology. Topics they study include:

  • Computer Aided Design
  • Systems and Control and Electronics
  • Designing and Making products of value
  • Food Technology including the License to Cook certificate
  • Graphics
  • Textiles
  • RMT
  • Designing for a contextual challenge

In Key Stage 4 learners can follow a range of pathways and courses having opted in Y9 or Y10 having 2.5 hours of learning per week for each chosen option.

The department offers a mixture of GCSE and vocational subjects in the areas of:

  • Food preparation and nutrition GCSE (AQA)
  • Engineering Level 2 Tech Award (Pearson)
  • GCSE Design Technology (AQA)
  • GCSE Art and Design Textiles (AQA)
  • Graphic Design (NCFE)
