Year 10 Football Success

Our Lady's footballers are currently maintaining their outstanding record of success. The Year 10 football team are unbeaten so far this year, a great achievement, with recent wins at Fisher More 5-0 and Holy Cross 4-1. The team is progressing well in the Lancashire Football League and we wish them continued success for the rest of the season!

Reminder of High Standards

In recent weeks we have had a renewed whole school focus on two of our community principles at Our Lady's: We use appropriate language, and We respect each other and our diversity. Whole year group assemblies led by Headteacher Ms Knight and Assistant Headteacher Mrs Evans, have focused on reminding all children of the importance of using language that is respectful to everyone in our community, including those of a different race, religion, disability, sex, gender identity or sexuality. We greatly value the support of parents and carers in maintaining our high standards.

Musicians, Singers and Dancers

Our talented young people have been busy delivering a full programme of Christmas events in recent days. On Tuesday 10th December a group of our singers, along with other local schools, took part in the annual CAFOD Carol Concert in St. Thomas' church in Up Holland, organised by St. John Rigby College. Our Lady's dancers, from every year group, delighted parents and friends at the Winter Wonderland Production in school on Tuesday 12th December. Student Leaders from Year 8 and above also worked hard to choreograph younger students' routines, including working with children from our local primary schools. We were delighted to welcome young performers from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Primary School, St. Richards Catholic Primary School and Woodland Primary School who all contributed to another outstanding evening of dance. Musicians and singers also wowed parents and friends once again with another exceptional evening of live Christmas music, all performed by our very own wonderful students in Our Lady's Christmas Concert on Monday 16th December. They all deserve a well earned rest over the Christmas break!

Vivienne Westwood Exhibition

Mrs Gillies organised a fantastic trip for students to see the Westwood Exhibition at the Atkinson theatre in Southport this month. This is an exhibition, drawn from Vivienne Westwood fan Malcolm Garrett's personal collection. It looks back at her designs and the campaigns that have made her The Grand Dame of fashion today. Year 10 Textiles students were able to capture the imagination through research and creativity by designing key pieces from his collection. This trip has allowed the girls an opportunity to research an artist that is current and relevant, someone who is in the news and who is influencing them. The girls will be using this to further develop their work in school.

Active Citizens in UK Parliament Week

Our Lady Queen of Peace took part in the third National UK Parliament Week to engage and involve young people in the role Westminster has in the UK society. Throughout the week students participated in a General Election vote with the Labour Party winning and the Liberal Democrats coming in second place. Students took part in topical debates including 'Should the government ban private schools?' and 'Should the UK hold a second referendum on leaving the European Union?'. Students also took part in a discussion workshop during lunchtime to ask and consider their questions about Brexit and how it might affect their lives.

This week Mrs Calderbank (STEM Co-ordinator) has led STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) activities across the school, promoting the importance of these subjects in helping students to gain important life skills. Students are being set a STEM challenge every day this week in form time – with a Christmas prize awarded to the fastest form with the correct answer.

Advent Service

Our whole school Advent service, led by our school chaplains Gill and Suzie, will take place on Thursday morning, with prayers, music and reflections to help prepare our school community appropriately for the feast of Christmas.

Our Lady's Welcomes the Local Community

A wonderful festive afternoon was experienced by all in our annual Senior Citizens' Christmas Party, which was full of live Christmas music from our talented musicians, Christmas quizzes, presents and cards for all, along with a delicious Christmas dinner, all served with good cheer and chat from our young people, staff and governors. Our senior friends were effusive in their praise of Our Lady's young people, commenting on their politeness and helpfulness. We look forward to welcoming them again in the future!

Support for Local Care Home

This year our school has joined in the Elm House Care Home Christmas card appeal. Staff at the Care Home, in Old Skelmersdale, appealed for members of the local community, including schools, to spare a thought for their elderly residents and help to provide a boost for a dementia charity. The owner of the home has generously pledged to donate £1 to Dementia UK for every Christmas card received. Following the Care Home manager's appeal, Our Lady's young people have enjoyed writing Christmas cards to residents at the home, ensuring that the elderly in West Lancashire know they are not forgotten in Skelmersdale this Christmas.

Bin Bag Challenge

As a school we have this term been supporting the 'Bin Bag Challenge' organised by Nugent, the Archdiocesan Charity, which works with families all across the North West. We will be continuing to support this in the New Year. After Christmas, if anyone is having a clear out of items such as clothing, shoes, handbags, books, bric a brac, and would like to donate them to the charity, please drop them off at school or send them in with your child, for the attention of Gill our Chaplain. We will be taking in donations from 6th January 2020 to February half term. Any items you can donate will be very much appreciated by the charity.

Mr. George Fox RIP

It is with sadness that we heard of the recent death of Mr George Fox, an extremely devoted and committed member of Our Lady's governing body over a long number of years. Mr Fox served on many governor committees and we are very grateful for all of his outstanding service to all in our school community. We will be celebrating his service to our school in the New Year. May he rest in peace.
