DfE Laptop Guide

What is included

Your package consists of a HP laptop, power supply and charger, sleeve, DfE documentation.

Powering on and charging up

Plug your device into the mains, using the power supply and charger included in your pack. It is advised to charge your laptop to 100% before removing the power supply. You can do this whilst using the laptop. To power on, press the power button on the top left corner of the keyboard.

Username and Password

The username is “.\localuser” and the password is blank.

If the username displayed is “.\localadmin”, simply delete it and enter “.\localuser”.

You must include the .\ before the localuser part of the username.

Installed software

Your laptop is installed with safeguarding settings to keep you safe online. This means you won’t be able to use this device to access inappropriate content.

Staying safe online

If you’re worried that your child is accessing harmful content on any device, you can receive support and advice online at: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/safeguarding-and-remote-education-during-coronavirus-covid-19.

If your child is worried or needs support, they can call Childline (0800 1111) or download their “For Me” app.

Connect to Wi-Fi

Your device needs to connect to a Wi-Fi network before you can use the internet. to do this:

  1. Click the network icon on the taskbar. If you do not see the icon, click the ^ symbol on the taskbar to display it.
  2. Choose the Wi-Fi you wish to connect to and select connect
  3. Type the Wi-Fi password, and then select Next
  4. You should choose “No” when asked if you want your device to be discoverable on the Wi-Fi network.

Installing software

The laptop is configured by the DfE to prevent the installation of additional software.
