Our Library is an important part of our school life, helping to foster a love of books and of reading for pleasure, which we hope will stay with the students throughout their lives. It provides books for the whole school, both students and staff. Our Library has a calm and relaxing atmosphere, where students can enjoy some quiet time, reading or studying.
Opening times
Miss Johannessen, the librarian opens the library for quiet reading at 8am Monday to Friday. It is also open every lunchtime and after school, until 5pm, Monday to Thursday.
Range of Books
Our library has a large stock of both fiction and non-fiction books suitable for all ages and abilities. Each department in school has their own area in the library which supports learning and their curriculum. The non-fiction books are categorised in relation to abilities and interest levels. There is also a selection of 'dyslexia friendly' books to ensure that all learners are appropriately catered for.
Borrowing Books
Books are usually borrowed for up to two weeks in the first instance. If a learner needs a book for longer than this – to complete a project, for example – he or she should bring it to the library and have the loan renewed.
Reminders about overdue books are sent out regularly to both classes and individual borrowers. If books are still not returned, a letter will be sent home informing parents of how they can replace it.
Daily Reading
For great success it is recommended that learners read for 35 minutes each day. This is something that learners will have to be responsible for, and English lessons will support learners in this as much as possible. When a book has been finished, learners must aim to complete the quiz within 48 hours.
Library Activities
Year 9 students have been involved in reading and voting for new books in the Lancashire Book of the year Competition. They have been to organised events and had the best time, meeting students from other schools and having debates and discussions about the books they have read.
The Librarian also actively promotes literary creativity through competitions. These include the Power of Poetry competition, the Integer Creative Writing competition (focused on short stories), and an Eco Poetry competition specifically designed for Year 7 students. These competitions provide students with a platform to showcase their writing talents and encourage a love for poetry and creative expression.
We hold a Creepy Crawly Roadshow, where Year 7 students who have achieved highly in a writing competition, get to meet a variety of creatures including snakes, spiders and giant snails.
